History

Rising Sun Theatre began in 2004 as a project at SKILLS Society in Edmonton and soon became an established theatre company. Now in our 13th season, Rising Sun Theatre has produced nine original performances and one short film. We have performed at conferences, arts festivals, and community theatre spaces to audiences of disabled people, families and caregivers, and the general public.

Since our inception, we have explored a range of artistic and performative disciplines including improvisation, movement, scripted works, storytelling and music. Our creative process is focused on ‘collective creation’ in which our actors actively develop original artistic material. Ranging in age from their early 20’s to mid 70’s, many of our actors have been with the company for more than five years. Our actors have also pursued and publicly presented other art forms including dance, music, film and visual art.

Rising Sun Theatre is a recipient of the Telus Courage to Innovate Award (2009).
